Who We Are

Holy Spirit Lutheran Church is a community of Lutheran Christians that was organized in 1967. We meet together to worship God, grow in our faith, and serve others. All of this is done to fulfill our mission to love God and bring people into a growing relationship with Jesus and His church.

We are part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Delaware-Maryland Synod, the governing body which works with congregations in this area. As part of the Westminster Conference, we support Carroll Lutheran Village and Carroll Lutheran School. We also work with ministries of our synod, the ELCA, and other social ministry organizations.

What We Believe

Lutherans are Christians who accept the teachings of Martin Luther, a 16th century German theologian who disagreed with the Roman Catholic church of his day. He felt that the church teachings were no longer in line with what the Bible said. He hoped that the church would change so that it was more consistent with the Word of God, but the ultimate result of his efforts was a separation between the Roman Catholic church and those who thought its teachings needed to be reformed. Those who accepted Luther's ideas became known as "Lutherans".

Today, nearly five centuries later, our Lutheran beliefs are still based on Luther’s theological teachings, although we have much in common with other Christians. We believe in the Triune God: the Father, who created the world and sustains it; the Son, who redeemed sinful humanity through his death on the cross; and the Spirit, who brought us to faith and works in us. Like Luther, we believe that there is nothing that we can do to save ourselves; salvation is a gift from God which we receive by God's grace through faith.
